Each year during the summer, Polizzi Generosa treats those with a sweet tooth to the well-known and long-awaited Sagra dello Sfoglio (Sfoglio cake Festival). Interested to find out what it is all about?
The traditional Polizzi cake made with fresh pecorino cheese, cinnamon, chocolate and ginger was loved and appreciated even by the Sicilian writer Leonardo Sciascia. The day dedicated to this delicacy of traditional Sicilian cuisine was established in 1994 by the Municipal Administration, the Pro Loco and all the pastry chefs of Polizzi.
The ancient recipe dates back to the 14th-15th centuries, when it was prepared by the nuns of the Monastery of Santa Margherita (Badia Vecchia) during the celebration of their patron saint, St. Benedict. The recipe was jealously guarded by the nuns and later, from the second half of the 19th century onward, by Polizzan families who still pass it on as the original version commands.
Along with the famous sfoglio, other typical Sicilian gastronomic, oil and handicraft products are served so that all tourists are introduced to the deliciousness and wonders that Sicily has to offer. It is also accompanied by folkloric performances and guided tours.
